Current Film Project

Here’s the link to a part of the film we’re planning to produce for 2012: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=262734077070123.

The actual story will be developed into a 30-minute length, under the title of  ”Youth Curtain“. Taing HeangBoong, its assigned filmmaker, has so far formed his own team called “K-Family” specializing in film and KTV productions, most of which are informal and were made during their spare times only. Stay tuned with his adventure with us, 4K!

Tree{s} of Life: Seeds of Change

Competition Outline:

SEADocs – The Southeast Asian Student Documentary Award is a competition to encourage the art of documentary filmmaking in the region as a platform to engage with pressing social and environmental issues.

The 2011 competition invites students aged 18 – 28 in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to submit a portfolio of their work and a motivational essay on making a film under the theme “Tree{s} of Life: Seeds of Change” by September 2, 2011.

A jury of film, television and forestry experts in each country will make a selection of three students based on a portfolio of their work and a motivational essay. The national shortlisted students will then receive expert guidance during the 8 week production period of their competition film.

During the production period, the film ideas of the students will be explored and developed under guidance of a consultant and the students will receive a budget grant of US$ 300 to produce a short documentary film (maximum 10 min. in length) in relation to the theme, which must be submitted by November 11, 2011.

The three regional winners are selected by an international jury and receive a cash prize of US$ 500 each. Furthermore, the first place winner receives a grant of up to US$ 5,000 to produce a feature length documentary.

Theme Outline:

Forests are home to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity with the livelihood of over 1.6 billion people dependent on forests. It is more than simply a rich ecological system, it is integral to life on this planet and to human survival. Our connection with the forests of this world is profound and multifaceted – covering cultural, medicinal, economic and ecological relationships. This essential bond is why the United Nations designated 2011 as the International Year of Forests and why it is the focus subject of SEADocs 2011.

It is a widely known fact that forest habitats are under threat in Southeast Asia and around the world as a result of human activity, whether through deforestation, industrialization or the ecological effects of accelerated climate change. However, individuals and communities are finding innovative ways to meet this challenge. They are not satisfied with merely identifying the problem, but pursue creative solutions – often on their own terms. SEADocs 2011 is not about forests purely as isolated biospheres, but as a precarious meeting point where the natural world and the modern world collide. The news usually speak of the negative consequences of this encounter, but dedicated individuals and groups of people around the world and in Southeast Asia are also becoming active to do their part in healing the relationship between forests and people, they are sowing seeds of change.

We are asking students in Southeast Asia to view the diverse and complex relationships between individuals and communities and the forest habitats of this region through their unique filmmaker’s eyes. The competition challenges aspiring documentary directors to look beyond the obvious and to seek captivating stories under the motto of “Tree{s} of Life: Seeds of Change”.

“Boyfriend” in post-production

After 6 months of pre-production (brainstorming, fundraising, script writing) and 1 month of shooting, we, 4K, find ourself now in the middle of editing our second collective film: “Boyfriend“. We’re collaborating with Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) Studio in completing this final stage of our work.

For those who you who don’t know yet about this story, it’s about the broken relationship between a father (Thanith) and a son (Sophea). Thanith wishes to get Sophea back on the right track. But he ask for help from his son’s friend, Sambath, who he finds to be a more decent guy. Yet, Thanith’sfrequent follow-up on Sophea, through, Sambath misleads both Sophea and his friends. These latter end up suspect Thanith and Sambath to be gays. Sophea gets even angrier with his father. Will this father-son relationship get even worse? What could change Sophea’s misapprehension about Thanith?

The answers will be found in our 20-minute film, to be premiered in early May 2011. The venue is to be confirmed. So stay tuned!

PS: CLA will be our second co-producer after WhiteWave in this “Boyfriend” film project. Yet, we’ll also welcome other donations, especially to cover our premiere screening costs.

Highlights of 4K 2010

“Open” Structure

First, thanks Davy for initiating interesting projects for us to partake so far. Their results have flamed us to form up an “official” team. Of course, although our early 2010 saw little progress in terms of public involvement, I’m happy to learn that most senior members still want to stick to the team. Now the structure becomes as flat as possible. Which means they can co-own the team whenever they feel like it. So you can be in, too, if you want to!

Cambodian Youth Arts Festival

Initiated by Cambodian Living Arts, this Festival gathered most renowned arts associations. It was our pride to participate in such a great-scaled event even we’re not yet “officially” registered.  This proves that our past achievements have been cherished and recognized, at least, in Phnom Penh. In return for that trust, we actively coordinated our roles in Media/PR and outstandingly showcased our products and skills. This Festival was the first of its kind for us to get exposed to an art crowd.

Cambodia International Film Festival

During this first event of its kind, we worked to help the organizing committee with local media and venue management.  Besides learning to work with relevant people in the industry, we earned another powerful credit by being engaged in a more relevant Festival, compared to CYAF.

4th Generation of Cambodian Cinema

By hook or by crooks, we made it, again, at Chinese House, with the kind contribution of Mekong Pirates, Sai ‘s Band, Cambodian Space Project, Bophana Center and other benefactors. Of course, we’ve found our Executive Producer for our new film, “Boyfriend”: H.E. Khieu Kanharith. With all his continuous support, he totally deserves this title.

Introductory Letter

It is another meaningful result of getting H.E. Khieu Kanharith involved with us in our new production. The letter opens for us four important doors:

1-      Registration of our team as a legal association with the Ministry of Interior

2-      Film permit for our new film, “Boyfriend”, with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts

3-      Permission to use public and private spaces during our shooting

4-      Other legal procedures related to our team

So I hope you can see that we’ve come this far. So stay tuned with us, Kon Khmer Koun Khmer, in 2011! Great things have yet to come. Many thanks for your continuous support of our team.

Meeting with H.E. Khieu Kanharith

December 08, 2010 – Our team reps, including Sithen, Rithea, Kanitha and Dana had the chance to meet with H. E. Khieu Kanharith. We thought it to be a personal conversation. Yet, H.E. surprised us by making it official and video-recorded for TVK broadcast!

Besides this special treat,  he encouraged us to keep up our great work. In responses to our current challenges, he asked us to go for registration of our team as an association and will support us alongside. Also present with him were H.E. Mao Ayuth, one of the renowned Cambodian filmmakers of the present time and H.E. Khieu Kanharith’s personal assistant.

It is noteworthy that, during our last fund-raiser, H.E. Khieu Kanharith donated to us the amount of US$500, which entitled him to be our Executive Producer for our ongoing film project: “Boyfriend“. We’re going to start shooting this film in early January and planning to release it before Khmer New Year (2011). So stay tuned for our second work!

Report on “4th Generation of Cambodian Cinema”

We are pleased to inform you that “4th Generation of Cambodian Cinema” (Oct. 16 and 17) at Chinese House, was quite a sweet success with support both from local and international guests. We’d also like to thank those of you who came to join us in this fundraising event and/or contributed to it. Our special thanks go to: Chinese House, Mekong Pirates, Sai’s band, Cambodian Space Project, Studio 182.

While Day 1 was highlighted with the warming presence and generous donation of H.E. Khieu Kanharith, multinational music band Cambodian Space Project handsomely dominated the ambiance of Day 2. As a result, we collected US$ 905 and KHR 60,600.

Again, to produce our new, professional and quality film, we need both additional financial contribution and constructive ideas. Of course, you all matter to us in this project…!

4th Generation of Cambodian Cinema – From Day 1 to Day 2

Many thanks for those of you who came to attend our “4K and Film Industry Meeting” and Mekong pirates last night. The meeting was especially with the presence of H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information of Cambodia. Part of his all-important speech was, “Through films, people experience Cambodia. Through you, 4K, they know what Cambodian people are like.” In addition to this meaningful word, H.E. has kindly contributed to us US$500, of the total collected last night of US$622 an KHR 19,600. This amount makes up only 15% of our target budget for our future film.

So if you feel like contributing some part to the remaining amount, you still have the chance today to attend our event featuring:
-2pm: “Orn Euy Srey Orn” (a tragic love story, around 1968) (unfortunately, “12 Sisters” is cancelled as filmmaker Ly BunYim could not get this DVD to screen for us owing to a recent flood to his house)
-4pm: “Twin Diamonds” (a collective film, 4K, in 2009)
-5pm: 4 short documentaries by 4K members (Mushroom growing, SMOTH (religious siging), Blessed Forest, “Hemacheat” cinema house destiny)
-7pm: Concert by Sai, a rising star from 4K, who now forms his own appealing music band!
-8pm: Concert by Cambodian Space Project, a “mixed-blooded” band inspired by Cambodian 1960s-1970s music

Despite our independent spirit, we still need your support in terms of ideas, materials and especially budget! And, tonight, not only will you enjoy yourselves, but also you’ll help a promising team like us grow to make another “masterpiece” in Cambodian film industry for YOU!

See you this afternoon and/or evening at Chinese House…

PS: We also make some artworks (T-shirts, paintings, posters) available for sale so you can purchase them to support our activities.
